A third global ecosystem ranking in recent months features the Miami metro area in an impressive position. The latest one is by Dealroom, a data platform that maps the world’s tech ecosystems. Dealroom analyzed 288 qualifying cities and metro areas across 69 countries to come up with its ranking.
In Dealroom’s ranking for its Global Tech Ecosystem Index 2025, the Miami metro area (that’s Miami-Dade through Palm Beach County) currently ranks #25 in the world and No. 11 in the US in the Global Champions category based on 2024 data and growth. We say “currently” here because the ranking is more than a flashy report when it was released last month. The information is also available on a live dashboard that updates automatically when new information surfaces, such as lagging venture information, and Miami, for example, has fluctuated between 24 and 26 over the last week.
Dealroom’s 2025 Global Tech Ecosystem Index evaluates factors such as venture capital investment, enterprise value, ecosystem momentum, AI talent, number of unicorns, university linkages, and patent activity, among others. It reveals where innovation is thriving and maps a region’s overall position on the world stage.
Global Champions are large and developed hubs measured through the lens of scale, and that’s the category makes the most sense for Miami, said Felix Ullmer, data integration and insights specialist for Dealroom. The other two categories Dealroom ranked are for watching the progress of often smaller ecosystems that are, on a per capita basis, punching way above their weight sometimes in a particular sector (Density Leaders) and fast-growing ecosystems among emerging markets (Rising Stars).
With the live dashboard, you can find deeper insights about the regions and sort and filter the data in a number of ways, including comparing your region with other peer cities, as in this Miami example, says Ullmer, who shared some general insights on Miami’s performance in the Global Tech Ecosystem Index 2025 with Refresh Miami.
Miami is performing well against its peers, says Ullmer. “The areas it is performing well are in early-stage and late-stage VC, total VC funding growth, which is up 28% between 2019-2020 to 2023-2024, and number of unicorns – 26. However, Miami is lacking in research outcomes such as patents.”
As always, the Bay Area, New York City, and Boston remain the top tech hubs globally, according to Dealroom’s ranking of Global Champions. But perhaps surprisingly, Paris has been identified as the fourth major global champion in the startup ecosystem landscape, establishing itself as the leading European tech hub ahead of London. Austin came in at No. 5 in this ranking. As for other Florida ecosystems at this writing, the Orlando metro ranked 64th and Tampa was 110th. Here is the Global Champions Dashboard ranking among all global regions.
You can also explore these insights and more details in the dashboard sorted by the US companies, where Miami currently ranks No. 11, here. After the big 3 and Austin were LA, San Diego, Washington DC, Chicago, Seattle and Denver in the top 10.
Notably, this is the third global ecosystem ranking this year that Miami has ranked high. In last month’s Startup Genome GSER 25 report, Miami ranked No. 22 in the world. In May, StartupBlink’s report ranked our metro area No. 28.
Dealroom researchers gave a sneak peek at sector breakdowns in an online briefing on the new report, and the data on sectors, such as fintech, AI, climatetech, etc., will be added to the live dashboard later this year. Currently, Miami ranks 10th in the world for fintech, which has indeed been our strongest sector for VC in at least the last seven years, according to my research for eMerge Insights reports.
While cautioning that these sector rankings are also fluid as more lagging data is added, Ullmer said Miami currently ranks 15th globally for crypto. He said food, medtech and cybersecurity were a bit further down in the rankings but also showing considerable sector strength in South Florida.
You can the Dealroom report that was released in late May here. It focuses mainly on the top 20 in each grouping and some rankings may have changed slightly as more data became available. What the report and live dashboard clearly highlight, however, is that a growing number of smaller ecosystems are closing the gap, prioritizing smarter scaling approaches, stronger alignment between founders, investors, and policy and are creating conditions for long-term value.
“One of the aims of this piece of work was to make it super open so everyone can understand where their strengths lie so they can lean into them and where there are some gaps in their ecosystems that they could address,” said Dealroom’s Head of Insights Orla Browne.
As a reminder, Refresh Miami has featured Dealroom’s Miami data and insights on its platform since October 2023. You can find our free ecosystem dashboard powered by Dealroom here. In the ecosystem dashboard on Refresh Miami, you can find sections such as the investment heatmap that show the strength of sectors for VC as well as fundings, exits and other venture data in real time, lists of Miami area startups and investors, and much more.
