We are challenging seven teams of filmmakers and developers to a “story hack” during FILMGATE INTERACTIVE. The two day story hack takes place from Saturday through Sunday, February 1st – February 2nd, 2014. The event offers an opportunity for filmmakers to work with developers and designers to create finished interactive prototypes–be they mobile sites, web apps, widgets, games or something we’ve never seen before–for the Web. The aim of the hackathon is to reimagine the documentary for the internet age.
We are looking for an MVP with a few functions that work well rather than many functions that don’t work. For coding, we hope that coders will come up with a software support for documentary footage (the footage will be provided by the film creators, either in advance or by being shot on location). The software could for example be used to allow the viewer to select footage to be viewed, the order in which it is viewed and other parameters for how the viewer consumes the documentary. If coders have a tool or platform for viewing content on which they are working, they can bring it along and develop it with the film creator. Another possibility is to use existing software tools to allow viewers to consume documentary content (video, animation, images, graphic) in new and surprising ways.
There is a free pre-hackathon workshop, led by the well known executive producer Adnaan Wasey of POV Digital (PBS); click here to sign up:
