Humantelligence equips companies with the tools to achieve a high-performing culture

Getting company culture right is a notoriously difficult pursuit. But Juan Luis Betancourt is on a mission to enable companies to use culture to scale. And, believe it or not, the idea came to Juan Luis Betancourt in a vision.

At the age of 40, Betancourt began a practice of deep meditation. Over the course of three days every few months, a spiritual leader guides Betancourt through the meditation session.

One of these deep meditative states would change the course of Betancourt’s life.

“I had a very clear vision about how to measure culture and scale performance across organizations,” he told Refresh Miami. “I saw exactly how it would come together.”

Each successive meditative practice would provide him the guidance he needed to lead him to the next stage of his business.

“It was almost like a divine message – being led by the universe to do this. And it aligns really well with what I love.” Six years later, Betancourt said that he feels like he has not worked a single day.

The business entity to come out of this vision is Miami-based Humantelligence. The company has developed a culture management platform to help improve collaboration and team performance.

Betancourt calls Humantelligence’s approach Culture-as-a-Service. Think of it as the opposite of an expensive consultant engagement. Rather than taking a top-down approach where the CEO dictates the culture of their company, Humantelligence takes a bottom-up approach.

The process starts with a 12-minute self assessment of each individual’s behaviors, motivators, and ideal working environment. Then, Humantelligence’s platform aggregates this data and creates a dashboard to help measure and understand each team member’s culture – and how they fit into their broader team or the company overall. The platform also helps businesses hire more effectively by choosing candidates that are a better cultural fit for a company. Humantelligence’s platform is used by a wide range of businesses, including Honda, Ashley Furniture, and Bank of the West.

Betancourt’s previous work experiences have fed into the development of Humantelligence’s platform. He was a partner at Korn/Ferry and Heidrick & Struggles, where he headhunted executives. Betancourt also held executive roles at Procter & Gamble, Reebok, Puma, and Décathlon.

More broadly, it has been Betancourt’s awareness of and interest in different cultures that culminated in the creation of Humantelligence. “I’ve always been exposed to different cultures and enjoyed exploring their complexity,” he said, noting that he speaks five languages, has lived all over the world, and had parents who worked in international development in Washington, DC.

Betancourt has leveraged his diverse background and unconventional career as a strength – not an easy feat in a culture where linear paths are lauded. “Interdisciplinary thinking is leading to higher performance and unique businesses, especially in the tech industry,” he said. “It’s great to see the pendulum swing more in the direction of people who have diverse experiences.”

In 2012, Betancourt abandoned New York for Miami. The Cuban-American thought that he had better prospects to meet a Cuban wife in the Magic City than up north. (“Of course I moved here and ended up meeting a woman from India,” he said.)

Since then, Betancourt has scaled Humantelligence to 12 full-time employees, two of whom are based in South Florida.

Looking forward, Betancourt is excited to continue helping businesses develop their culture. “You can improve collaboration when there’s better vibrational resonance between two souls. We are delivering that through higher self-consciousness: a vibrational improvement between two souls and the consciousness of a group or an organization.”
