Enabling the World's Transition to Artificial Legal Intelligence

The Position

Chief Technology Officer for a Princeton-founded, NSF-supported artificial legal intelligence startup. The two primary co-founders–the CEO and the Chief Scientist–are U Miami and Harvard professors, and we are looking to add to our leadership team. You don’t necessarily need to have prior CTO experience, but you must have phenomenal full-stack skills.

Please send a CV and a short (one paragraph max) introductory note. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!

Background on Company

Claudius Legal Intelligence is a National Science Foundation SBIR supported startup. “Claudius” is an AI that my co-founders and I started building when we were PhD students at Princeton. Now, three years later, countless technical hurdles have been overcome, and Claudius is emerging from beta. Our early adopters are blown away. But what is Claudius doing? Claudius is enabling the world’s transition to artificial legal intelligence.

Unlike other AI companies that leverage widely available data, we at Claudius have spent the past few years building predictive AI in subfields of the law that suffer from data scarcity. For instance, in personal injury, many case results are protected by confidentiality agreements; the few results that are shared through public-facing repositories tend to be outlier cases, that is, attorney self-reports of extremely high or extremely low verdicts.

Our strategy was this: we worked directly with firms, leveraging privacy preserving technology, such as federated learning, to learn from sensitive data. In addition to natural language processing, machine learning, and other technologies that fall within the AI ambit, Claudius also makes use of ensemble modeling and the products of decades of academic research.

The result is that, in Claudius’s chosen legal spaces, no one else comes close. For a typical personal injury case, we now can seamlessly process a firm’s case files, instantly cull similar cases from the firm’s historical results, produce a highly validated verdict prediction, and certify the prediction for use in mediations and settlement discussions. It’s transformative technology that is optimizing case outcomes, driving revenue, and increasing access-to-justice. Great attorneys are already practicing; great legal AI–Claudius–has just been born.
