Trained in construction law, Miami native Josh Levy spent his early career helping builders untangle the fine print that governs billion-dollar projects. He saw firsthand how often disputes came down to two things: documents that were too confusing, and teams that didn’t know how to apply them.
That experience gave him the spark for Document Crunch, a platform that uses AI to help contractors and project managers actually understand the contracts that can make or break a job.
“Our industry runs on compliance and contract documents, and the stakes are massive,” Levy [pictured above] told Refresh Miami. “Fifty percent of projects finish over budget or time. Who pays that difference often depends on what’s buried in those documents.”
Levy and his co-founders, Adam Nadler, Jennifer Bush, and Adam Handfinger, began working on the idea in 2018. By 2020, the company was officially underway, with early prototypes built in South Florida before the team moved operations to Atlanta. But Levy stressed that his roots will always remain in South Florida.
“I was born and raised in Miami. I went to the University of Miami for law school. No matter where the company grows, I’ll always be a South Florida guy,” he said.
Handfinger, who serves as Document Crunch’s Co-Founder, Advisor, and Chairman, echoed that perspective.
“Miami has experienced tremendous population growth and building construction over the past 25 years, and that dynamic construction landscape has been central to Document Crunch’s journey,” he said.
“By working closely with contractors and clients on some of the region’s most complex projects, we gained invaluable insight into the industry’s real pain points. That perspective allowed us to leverage AI in a way that goes beyond simply applying generative technology to a project’s construction documents.”
Handfinger continued: “At Document Crunch, we’ve embedded deep subject-matter expertise directly into our platform and algorithms, designing tools and workflows that make critical knowledge accessible and actionable for every construction professional.”
Despite being in an industry not known for innovation, Document Crunch has scaled at breakneck speed. The company recently landed at No. 311 on the 2025 Inc. 5000 list, putting it in the top 6% of fastest-growing private companies in America. It ranked No. 29 among U.S. software companies, fueled by revenue growth that has nearly tripled year after year. Today, more than 400 of the biggest names in construction rely on the platform, supported by a team of 90 employees.
That growth has come from staying relentlessly focused on solving a visceral problem rather than chasing hype. “The whole world has lost its mind with AI,” Levy said. “We’ve never seen ourselves as an AI company. We’re solving a real, painful issue that this industry has lived with for decades. AI just happens to be one of the tools that helps us do it.”
At its core, Document Crunch “crunches” project documents – contracts, compliance manuals, specifications – and translates them into clear guidance teams can actually use. Over time, the platform has gone from simple document review to automating key workflows: generating compliance notices, suggesting best practices, and providing accountability across project teams. The goal is simple: fewer disputes and less wasted money.

Levy pointed to the rising costs of claims as proof of why this matters. “The average value of a construction claim in the U.S. is $60 million, and that number has been climbing,” he said. “That’s not sustainable. We’re giving teams clarity and knowledge on a daily basis so they don’t shoot themselves in the foot.”
For Levy, the secret sauce is the people behind the company. He credited both his employees, known internally as “crunchers,” and the broader customer community for building momentum.
“We’ve been fortunate to attract a world-class team and an amazing group of early adopters who became our ambassadors. That community has snowballed into something way bigger and better than what I could have imagined,” he said.
Looking ahead, Levy sees Document Crunch expanding into a true end-to-end risk reduction platform.
“We’ve validated the problem space we’re in, and we don’t see growth slowing down,” he said. “Every stakeholder in construction has an interest in keeping projects on track. Our vision is an industry with fewer disputes, and that’s a big vision worth chasing.”
