If you think Miami traffic is tough, try explaining quantum computing at a cocktail party. That’s the challenge Matt Cimaglia has taken on – and he’s not shying away.
The founder and managing partner of Quantum Coast Capital has been crisscrossing the country hosting events designed to make one of the most complex technologies in the world a little easier to grasp. This October, he’s bringing the show home with Quantum Beach 2025, a one-day summit at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach.
For Cimaglia, this work is as much personal as professional. “I feel like I’ve been given some sort of gift,” he told Refresh Miami. “Because of my background in communications, I get to be this bridge between a very complex subject and people that really should know a lot about it.”
That bridge matters more than ever. While quantum technology is often seen as a distant frontier, Cimaglia argued that it’s already edging into the mainstream.
“We’re still eight to ten years away from very significant changes, but in the next two to five years we’ll see real breakthroughs,” he said. “If we don’t start preparing now by building a workforce, shaping policy, and educating the public, we risk stifling innovation when the moment arrives.”
Cimaglia compared the potential of quantum to the early days of the internet, noting that it’s not a replacement for artificial intelligence but a new layer of infrastructure that will supercharge AI, logistics, cybersecurity, and healthcare.
His favorite analogy is traffic: “Quantum will help us optimize traffic flows in real time. A study that would take years on a classical computer could be done in days or hours with quantum.”
Healthcare may be even more compelling. “Quantum could help create personalized medicine,” he said. “Not a blockbuster drug for everyone, but one designed for you, based on your DNA. That’s not science fiction. We’re on track to see it within the next decade.”
South Florida, he stressed, is in a unique position to lead. With universities investing heavily in research, companies planting roots in Palm Beach County, and the region’s growing role as “Wall Street South,” the building blocks for a quantum hub are already in place.
“Quantum will play a significant role in our communities, especially when we start to think about healthcare, logistics, and cybersecurity,” Cimaglia asserted.
That opportunity is central to Quantum Beach. Now in its third edition since launching in 2021, the event aims to do three things: give attendees a baseline understanding of quantum, showcase the progress already happening across Florida, and start shaping a workforce that will be ready for the industry’s rise.
Cimaglia pointed to recent conversations with state officials as proof that awareness is spreading.
The lineup includes panel discussions, keynotes, and networking sessions with leading figures from academia, capital markets, government, and industry. Platinum sponsors D-Wave, Quantinuum, and IonQ – three of the most prominent companies in the space – are sending executives. Florida’s universities will also showcase their work, underscoring how deep the bench already is across the state.
But Cimaglia is most excited about the chance to connect ideas with people who might not otherwise step into a quantum discussion. “Quantum Beach is a welcoming space,” he said. “There are no stupid questions. The physicists I’ve met are excited to share what they’re doing, they just haven’t really had a platform. We’re building that stage for them.”
Quantum may sound abstract, but if Cimaglia is right, the decisions being made now will shape South Florida’s economy for decades to come. His hope is that when a true “quantum moment” arrives, the region will be ready – not asking why it matters, but wondering what took so long.
