It’s climate. It’s blockchain. It’s Miami – and it all just makes sense.
Local climatetech/web3 startup Raad Labs just announced that it has raised a cool $2.25 million in a funding round led by CoinFund. Tribe, EV3, and Protagonist also joined the party, backing a venture that aims to make weather data collection more accurate and accessible through a decentralized network of sensors.
T.J. Ragsdale, who previously co-founded battery storage protocol Entheos Network, is at the helm of Raad Labs – bringing his expertise to tackle a pressing need.

“There is a significant, unmet need for high-quality weather, air quality, and soil data that can equip businesses, utilities, insurers, and governments with the necessary information to prevent climate disasters cost-effectively, rather than responding to them at a high expense,” he said in a statement.
Raad Labs’ approach involves deploying a network of distributed sensors that monitor various environmental factors such as weather patterns, greenhouse gas emissions, wildfire risks, and soil conditions. By leveraging web3 technology, the company incentivizes sensor operators to provide high-quality data, addressing the critical gaps in current weather data systems. This data is crucial, especially in regions prone to wildfires. The advanced sensors deployed by Raad Labs offer localized soil moisture and acidity readings, enhancing the accuracy of wildfire risk modeling and enabling better preventative measures.
The Montauk Climate incubator, which brought Raad Labs to life, is known for fostering companies dedicated to sustainability. Co-founded by industry veterans Philip Krim, Evan Caron, and Sharo Atmeh, Montauk Climate’s mission is to build a sustainable future by developing cutting-edge technology companies.
“Raad Labs is at the forefront of an exciting transformation in how earth observation data is collected and utilized,” commented Krim. “With this funding, we are poised to develop groundbreaking technology that will benefit a wide range of industries while also empowering individuals to contribute to and profit from the Raad Labs network.”
The global market for weather forecasting, valued at $1.76 billion in 2022, is expected to surge to $4.18 billion by 2030. Accurate weather data is vital across numerous sectors, including finance, insurance, agriculture, and utilities, which rely on precise monitoring and forecasting. Meanwhile, extreme weather events are anticipated to cause $711 billion in economic losses over the next five years, underscoring the pressing need for improved weather data collection methods.
Currently, Raad Labs’ tech is making strides in areas such as monitoring, observation, modeling, and forecasting. The potential applications are vast, ranging from providing data for large language models and AI applications to methane detection. The company’s DePIN (Decentralised Physical Infrastructure Networks) model ensures that high-fidelity, low-cost data is available to governments and industries, while sensor operators benefit from passive income through blockchain incentives.
Despite the existence of over 250,000 privately held weather stations in the U.S., significant data gaps remain – posing risks to weather-dependent businesses. Raad Labs aims to fill these gaps by expanding its network of weather sensors and engaging the enthusiastic WEENie (Weather Enthusiast) community through reward-based tokenized initiatives.
David Pakman, managing partner at CoinFund, expressed his excitement about supporting Raad Labs. “We are thrilled to support Raad Labs in their innovative approach to weather data collection and to satisfy the significant unmet demand for additional weather and atmospheric data,” he said. “We believe this team and approach can create the leading decentralized atmospheric data collection network in the world.”
Backing Raad Labs is an advisory board that includes Osho Jha, CEO of dClimate and Chief Data Scientist at Arbol; Jason Badeaux, CEO of Daylight; and Matt Vitebsky, former Head of Product at Accuweather.
And by the looks of it, Raad is just starting to heat up.
