SUMMARY:A Night with Jeremy Gilbert\, Washington Post's Director of Strategic Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:From the Past to the Future: The Transformation of an Analog Media Business\nIn early 2013\, The Washington Post was facing the same uncertain future many news organizations around the country continue to battle against: a stagnant print business and a promising\, if not fledgling\, digital one. By the end of the year\, the Graham family had sold The Post to Jeff Bezos and less than five years later\, The Post has more than tripled its audience and expanded its business model into profitability. Jeremy Gilbert\, The Post’s Director of Strategic Initiatives\, will talk about this transformation and offer an in-depth look at how The Post experiments with new audience strategies to improve the efficacy of its stories\, personalizes the reader experience\, harnesses new social media platforms for distribution\, and employs new and novel technologies that push the boundaries of storytelling.\n \nAgenda\n6:30PM – 7:15PM: Networking\, drinks and light bites\n7:15PM – 8:00PM: Introductions and Speaker Presentation\n8:00PM – 8:30PM: Q&A with the audience  \n \n\n \nAbout Jeremy Gilbert\n\nAs Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Washington Post\, Jeremy leads the newsroom to identify\, create\, and execute unique digital products and storytelling experiences. He reimagined election night experiences\, created The Post’s first virtual reality stories\, built a freelance network that changes how The Post covers national stories and launched a new leadership vertical. Jeremy works closely with the engineering\, product design\, graphics\, audience\, analytics and advertising teams. Previously he led digital strategy at National Geographic\, taught journalism at Northwestern University\, worked at The Poynter Institute and art directed a couple of newspapers.\n\n \nPhoto/Video Disclaimer\nRefresh Miami will be taking digital photography and/or videography throughout the event. I create robust\, meaningful sites—for everyone from small organizations and startups to Fortune 500 companies. \nI’ve been building unique WordPress themes and plugins since WordPress 1.5 (that’s 2005). I’ve been with BuddyPress since the beginning (version 0.1). I’ve been a full-time freelance developer for over a decade. \nI’ve had to wear a number of hats in the past… Application Developer\, Front End Developer\, Backend Programmer\, Database Administrator\, Project Manager in a wide variety of companies and startups. I have been working as a full-time freelancer and consultant for over a decade. Most of this time as been spent as a WordPress developer in the South Florida / Miami / Ft. Lauderdale area. \nI’m particularly interested and focused on startup projects and anything WordPress/BuddyPress related. Of course\, i’m always interested in building cutting edge interactive applications\, especially if they use WordPress. I love to push WordPress and BuddyPress to the limit. I prefer to code with CodeIgnitor for stand-alone PHP applications. \nI am also an amateur speaker\, speaking at several conferences\, WordCamps\, meetups\, BarCamps\, and Refresh Miami events. I don’t speak often\, but try to at least speak a few times a year. If you can stand the sound of my voice\, you can check out what podcasts i’ve been on recently. \nPrivileged to be a founding member of WordCamp Miami (an annual conference about WordPress that brings in over 750+ people each year) and have organized it from 2010 to 2015. \nPhoto/Video Disclaimer: \nRefresh Miami will be taking digital photography and/or videography throughout the event.
