Expect an evening of interesting work on view\, good food and refreshments\, and wonderful conversations with creatives from Moonlighter’s decade of community building. \nAbout The Project – DECO PORTALS\nDeco Portals of Lincoln Road transforms the historic Morris Lapidus folly into a contemporary public art experience through a series of illuminated Art Deco-inspired archways. Drawing from Miami Beach’s iconic architectural language\, the installation creates a sequence of portals that invite visitors to move through\, pause\, and engage with the space in a new way. By day\, the sculptural forms frame views of Lincoln Road while celebrating the geometric patterns\, rhythm\, and elegance that define the district’s cultural identity. By night\, integrated lighting brings the arches to life\, creating moments of discovery\, play\, and connection. The project uses digital fabrication to help students exploring advanced manufacturing realize their creative solution for Lincoln Road.\nThe project elevates public art by blending architecture\, technology\, and storytelling into an immersive experience that honors the legacy of Morris Lapidus while reinterpreting it for a new generation. As both a landmark and gathering space\, the installation encourages exploration\, photography\, and social interaction\, creating memorable experiences that strengthen Lincoln Road’s role as one of Miami Beach’s most vibrant cultural destinations. Ultimately\, the project serves as a gateway between past and present\, celebrating the historic character of Lincoln Road while creating a captivating moment of fascination that draws visitors into the district both day and night. \nAbout The Program – MAKER CITIES\nMaker Cities is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded workforce development and placemaking initiative led by Moonlighter FabLab. The program expands access to advanced manufacturing\, emerging technologies\, and creative entrepreneurship by engaging participants in a six-month\, studio-based learning experience. Each year\, 20 participants develop skills in CAD/CAM design\, 3D printing\, laser cutting\, CNC milling\, design thinking\, entrepreneurship\, and civic innovation while working alongside industry mentors and community partners.\nAs the culminating experience of the program\, participants collaborate on a real-world civic placemaking challenge for Miami Beach’s historic Lincoln Road district. This year\, five interdisciplinary teams researched the site\, engaged stakeholders\, developed design proposals\, and presented their concepts to a panel of professional designers\, architects\, urbanists\, artists\, and representatives from civic departments. Following a competitive design review process\, one proposal was selected for full-scale fabrication and installation as a temporary public art intervention on Lincoln Road. The project is made possible through a partnership between Moonlighter FabLab\, the Lincoln Road Business Improvement District (BID)\, and the City of Miami Beach Department of Arts & Culture\, demonstrating how emerging talent can contribute meaningful design solutions to the public realm. \nCelebrating 10 Years in the Making: Moonlighter FabLab\nMoonlighter FabLab is a Miami Beach-based nonprofit makerspace\, STEAM learning center\, and community innovation hub dedicated to expanding access to creative technologies\, digital fabrication\, and workforce development opportunities. Through hands-on educational programs\, public workshops\, artist collaborations\, and community-driven projects\, Moonlighter empowers learners of all ages to transform ideas into tangible solutions using tools such as 3D printers\, laser cutters\, CNC machines\, electronics\, and emerging technologies.\nMoonlighter FabLab has served as a cultural and educational partner to the City of Miami Beach\, delivering programs that connect art\, design\, science\, technology\, and civic engagement. Enjoy light bites and refreshments\, music\, and a worskhop/demonstration by the researchers and designers. \nAbout Dancing Columns | Equation-Based Robotic Fabrication\nAn exploration of robotic 3D printed objects generated from mathematical equations\, created by Joseph Choma and Luis Pacheco\, with fabrication support from the RDF Lab at FIU. The featured objects are derived from a family of morphed toruses\, where altering the parameters of the equations leads to captivating and unexpected geometric features. The forms emerge from a complex interplay of sine and cosine functions\, as seen in the provided equations\, where variables are manipulated to create intricate\, undulating surfaces. This collaboration bridges the gap between digital design and physical manifestation\, emphasizing the artistic potential of mathematical equations in creating dynamic forms. A deeper study of these geometric mutations can be found in the book\, Morphing: A Guide to Mathematical Transformations for Architects and Designers by Joseph Choma\, which delves into the processes and theories behind these transformations. \nAbout Joseph Choma\nJoseph Choma is Director of the School of Architecture and Professor of Architecture at Florida Atlantic University. Previously\, he taught at The Cooper Union\, MIT\, and Clemson University. He was the 2019-20 NCCR Digital Fabrication Researcher in Residence at the ETH Zurich and received awards from the AIA\, ACMA\, and ACADIA — including the 2023 ACADIA Innovative Research Award of Excellence. His material explorations have been noted by CompositesWorld Magazine as “spearheading research into the use of foldable composites.” He is the inventor of Foldable Composite Structures — U.S. Patent Number 10\,994\,468. Additionally\, he is the author of three books\, Morphing: A Guide to Mathematical Transformations for Architects and Designers (2015)\, Études for Architects (2018) and The Philosophy of Dumbness (2020). Joseph completed graduate studies in design and computation at MIT and completed his PhD in Architecture at the University of Cambridge\, where he was a Cambridge International Scholar. \nAbout Luis Pacheco\nLuis Pacheco is a Robotics and Digital Fabrication Research Specialist at Florida International University\, where he also serves as an adjunct professor in the School of Architecture and the Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab. With a deep specialization in digital manufacturing\, computational design\, and architectural robotics\, his research emphasizes innovative workflows in additive manufacturing for construction and the development of robot control interfaces. He is also the founder of Neobrutal Studio\, a consulting company for additive manufacturing and robotics\, and was previously the co-founder and CEO of MakerMex\, Mexico’s first 3D printer manufacturing company. McGriff was a winner of the 2021 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship and the recipient of the 2022 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art. He is currently based in Miami\, Florida.

She has 20 years of experience in combat robotics\, winning a number of national titles. Andrea recently presented at the Kennedy Space Center on designing for damage and redundancy\, and has spoken on discussion panels for a variety of audiences. She is also co-founder of MakeMIA Makerspace and a strong proponent of the Maker movement.\nAndrea most recently worked in research and development at Zimmer Biomet\, where she has focused on upper extremity trauma for the past 11 years and has been awarded several utility patents. Andrea received her BS and MS in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Miami. \nThis month’s talk is accompanied by a special exhibition at the Gallery in the venue\, followed by a live robotics competition to give participants a first-hand experience of the combat robotics sport!
