From an early age, Ethan Loosbrock of Ouros Energy felt compelled to create something with a significant, positive impact on the world. His passions in environmentalism and the power of science and engineering to address ecological challenges set him on a direct path to where he stands today – building a company that could revolutionize the battery industry.
The current landscape of lithium-ion batteries presents significant challenges, they are costly and often ineffective, slowing our transition to sustainable energy solutions, said Loosbrock [pictured above]. “Ouros Energy is countering these challenges by developing lithium-ion batteries based on innovative, low-cost, high-capacity cathode chemistry. This new technology promises to deliver batteries that are not only cheaper but also possess ten times the energy density at merely 1/100th of the cost.”
Initially, Ouros plans to deploy its technology in the aerospace sector, particularly for drones and electric vertical takeoff and landing (EVTOL) aircraft. The primary challenge in aerospace is reducing weight and cost effectively, which Ouros’ technology addresses. Eventually, the company aims to expand into all sectors currently relying on lithium-ion solutions, said Loosbrock.
Ouros has developed small-scale prototypes that demonstrate the energy, power, and efficiency of their technology’s potential, with their first aerospace cell expected by the middle of 2025, Loosbrock said. Their cathode material excludes expensive components such as nickel and cobalt and standard manufacturing processes, thereby achieving only a tenth of the materials cost.
Designed to meet the needs across all industrial markets, including aerospace, automotive, consumer electronics, and grid storage, Ouros’ batteries are engineered without sacrificing performance. The market potential for these applications is estimated at $200 billion.
In addition to their technical advancements, Ouros’ work aligns with global environmental initiatives. “By enhancing battery efficiency and affordability, we are advancing the global shift towards renewable energy sources essential for reducing carbon emissions,” Loosbrock said, noting that their technology could significantly boost electric vehicle adoption rates and expand renewable energy storage systems, crucial for combating climate change. Loosbrock also highlighted the environmental benefits of their manufacturing approach, adding, “By eliminating the use of rare materials like cobalt and nickel, we contribute to more sustainable mining practices and reduce the ecological footprint of battery production.”
Ouros recently opened their seed funding round, aiming to raise $3 million to establish their first commercial manufacturing line and begin battery production. Currently, the team comprises five specialists, primarily mechanics and chemists, working in their Wynwood workshop to refine their prototypes.
Ouros is a significant addition to the growing Miami hard tech ecosystem. Originally from Minnesota, when asked why he chose to build the company in Miami, Loosbrock highlighted the tech hub’s growing talent and capital. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a noticeable exodus to cities like Austin and Miami, which he saw as indicative of a politically healthier and more business-friendly environment conducive to lifestyle and enterprise.
