Kitchen Robotics’ journey from garage to gourmet, revolutionizing ‘faster’ food along the way

By Riley Kaminer

When Ofer Zinger, co-founder of Kitchen Robotics, shared his journey into the world of tech, it was clear that his path was anything but linear. From his early days in high-tech to a deep dive into philosophy, Zinger’s diverse background set the stage for the innovative venture that is now shaking up the food industry.

Back in 2008, Zinger launched his first company, inspired by the inefficiencies he observed in online advertising. “We noticed there might be an opportunity in automation because all the online advertising was done manually,” he told Refresh Miami.

Fast forward a few years, and Zinger’s knack for identifying automation opportunities led him to co-found Dynamic Yield, a company that personalized website experiences and was eventually sold to McDonald’s for $300 million.

But for Zinger, this was just the beginning. About five years ago, he teamed up with a former CEO of iRobot in Israel to explore automation in a new domain: the kitchen. “We decided to combine forces and ended up with this kitchen automation solution, which is about robotics and customization,” Zinger explained. And so Kitchen Robotics was born, with its flagship product, Beastro, poised to transform the fast-food industry.

Beastro might look like your standard robotic chef, but it’s far from it: it’s a sophisticated blend of hardware and software designed to tackle some of the biggest challenges in the food industry. From reducing labor costs to minimizing food waste, Beastro aims to provide a more efficient and personalized dining experience. “Imagine being able to design your dish to suit your tastes and dietary needs, all managed by a robot that never forgets an order,” Zinger said.

The technology behind Beastro incorporates several layers of AI. Predictive analytics help forecast demand, ensuring that ingredients are ordered accurately and waste is minimized. Meanwhile, the system’s generative AI can create recipes on the fly based on available ingredients, catering to individual preferences. “It’s like having your grandma in the kitchen, but with the precision and consistency only robotics can offer,” Zinger asserted.

This innovative approach is already making waves in Miami, where Kitchen Robotics has established its U.S. base. Their technology is currently being tested at Florida International University, where it serves a diverse community of 50,000 students and staff. “We believe in Miami’s tech scene and its food culture,” Zinger said, highlighting our city’s importance to their operations.

One of the key advantages of Beastro is its ability to address labor shortages, a pressing issue in the hospitality industry. Florida, in particular, has been hit hard, with only 53 available workers for every 100 open jobs and a staggering 144% annual turnover rate in quick-service restaurants. “We are not taking jobs away – we’re filling gaps that businesses struggle to manage,” Zinger emphasized.

The business model for Kitchen Robotics is designed to be flexible and scalable. Starting at around $4,000 a month, their leasing model allows businesses of various sizes to integrate this technology. “Whether it’s a small chain or a large corporation, our goal is to make high-quality, personalized meals accessible and efficient,” Zinger said.

Looking ahead, Zinger is excited about scaling Kitchen Robotics’ solutions. The company has already raised around $10 million from notable investors, including entrepreneur Ziv Aviram, who sold Mobileye to Intel for $15.3 billion. “Now, we’re ready to expand and see our technology in more locations,” Zinger said, confident in their capacity to deploy units swiftly and efficiently.

“The next year or two will be about seeing how our efforts in scaling pay off, making our vision of automated, personalized dining a widespread reality,” he added.

So, the next time you find yourself at FIU or another location equipped with Beastro, know that you’re experiencing a slice of the future. Indeed, a feast of #MiamiTech, one delicious meal at a time.
