Mark Cuban invests in Kind Designs
Renowned investor Mark Cuban, alongside early stage climate tech VC firmAnthropocene Ventures, has joined Miami startup Kind Designs’ $5 million seed round. The new capital enables Kind Designs to triple production capacity and expand its team to meet explosive demand for its Living Seawalls.
Anya Freeman, Kind Designs’ founder and CEO, called the undisclosed investment “a huge vote of confidence in our mission to regenerate marine ecosystems and protect coastal communities.” In September, Kind Designs announced that they have raised a $5 million seed round co-led by GOVO Venture Partners, M4 Investing, and the Florida Opportunity Fund.
Kind Designs has devised a solution to 3D print 95% of seawalls, making them less expensive to produce. They call them “Living Seawalls” because their design mimics coral reefs and mangroves, which promote biodiversity and improve the water quality. Additionally, the seawalls will have embedded sensors to monitor data such as pH levels and water temperature in real-time.
“Kind Designs surpasses our criteria with its immediate real-world application, clear business model, path to revenue, and the merging of nature’s smarts through biomimicry with 3D printing technology. Yet, what truly solidified our commitment is the performance of the founder, Anya. In a brief span, she has demonstrated exceptional execution,”said Anthropocene Ventures’ Managing Partner Matthew McGraw in a statement.
This month, Kind Designs, now a team of 10, delivered the first Living Seawall panels in November 2023. The company plans to triple its production capacity by February 2024, with its recent purchase of two additional printing robots. Looking ahead, Kind Designs plans to further disrupt the coastal construction industry by working with government agencies to offer Living Seawall tax incentives on the county, state and federal levels. This program will be similar to incentives already in place such as solar energy and EV tax credits.

Biller Genie opens Orlando office
After securing $5 million in a Series A investment in 2022, Biller Genie told Miami Inno it would seek office space in Orlando – and it has. Since September, 23 of Biller Genie’s 35 staffers have been working out of a 4,000-square-foot office at 7680 Universal Blvd. President and Co-founder Garima Shah said it’s a second headquarters.
“The pandemic hit right after we launched, as soon as we started getting traction, so we hired an almost all-remote staff,” said Shah. “When we started collecting ourselves and trying to figure out where we needed to be, we found that the talent in Orlando is so much richer, and we’ve been able to find great candidates from various technical companies because we’ve got such a big tech scene here.”
Shah said the company signed a two-year lease and chose the office building in southwest Orlando because it is centrally located and accessible. Biller Genie is a cloud-based automated billing platform that Shah said gets businesses paid much faster than manual billing. Read more here.
